HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Word of the day.

For Christmas, we got an awesome "new word a day" calendar. We've been enjoying it! (Our storage room, btw, is now being called our "omnium gatherum" and the tear-off page is taped to the door, lol.) Anyhow, yesterday's word was:

Is it wrong that, before the boys had a chance to actually read the definition, I told them that it meant Micah...because I can't seem to "mute" him? ;)

Bullseye!

Just so ya know...

Asher hit his first bullseye. :) This was at JOAD practice last night (Sunday) from 18 meters...the third time/session he's ever shot his new compound bow (and the first time from that distance). It was his second end of the night (an end is shooting three arrows) and he was stoked. If he manages two more, he'll have met one of his goals for 2012. Yay!!

Mythbusters Live!

So. On of our new things to TRY this past week was all about focusing on experiences instead of stuff. For Christmas, instead of yet more Legos, Nathan and I got the boys (and us) tickets to Mythbusters Live at the Budweiser Event Center. (The boys have LOVED Mythbusters for years and have watched pretty much every episode from all ten seasons.) The show was Thursday night. It was awesome! Here are the boys next to our seats just before the show started:

We had pretty good seats right on the floor...could see Adam and Jamie like this:

We watched as they involved audience members in fun experiments, answered audience questions and shared behind-the-scenes stories. Stuff like this:

Yup. Had a blast! (Micah declared it better than The Nutcracker and the Ringling Bros/Barnum & Bailey Circus combined, lol...so you know it must have been fabulous, because he loved both those other things plenty!)

And then...

After grandparents flew home, we had a brief taste of "getting back to normal" before a quick visit from my baby sister and her husband earlier this week. My brother and niece drove up (they live about 40 miles from us) and we all had a fun evening of chatting and playing games on Monday. The next day we did some shopping and finally picked up the boys' bows! Here are the boys with their Aunt Cassy and Uncle Charlie at Rocky Mountain Archery:

Unfortunately, Cassy & Charlie had to leave from there (short visit this time around!) but the boys and I stayed a bit longer and worked on getting their bows all set up:

The next day, Wednesday, we started a new session of our homeschool group archery lessons and the boys worked even more on getting their sights adjusted to fit them. They'll have JOAD practice on Sunday and are pretty darn stoked.

(Look at that! I think I'm pretty caught up now. Ha. :) Now I can work on other things, like possibly revamping/updating that blog header up there, lol...)

Christmas...

Continuing in my catching up...

(And, btw, Nathan's "office" is really just the little extra space at the top of the stairs in the middle of the house. And, yes, you counted correctly if you see four computers in that picture. We also have the one in my office, Nathan's iPad, two iPhones and an iPod Touch. We're like that, lol. Also, most of the credit for that entire space goes to Nathan...who was finally fed up enough to make a plan. ;) The bonus he got at work awhile back didn't hurt either, lol.)

Let's see. Christmas was good. Santa brought the boys each a new bow case and a giftcard to Rocky Mountain Archery along with a more individual gift (legos in two cases and Apple technology in the other). Since their new bows weren't in yet, Christmas day was spent customizing the bow cases (each boy picked a different color bow and hence received a different colored roll of duct tape which was then used to identify the bow cases) and playing with the legos:

Yes, Noah's bow and duct tape are black. Yes, so is the bow case already. He still added the duct tape and informed me that it made a difference because the duct tape is a glossy finish. So there. :) (For the record, Asher's bow is blue and Micah's is camo.)

I must also interject here how nice it was to have a Christmas that wasn't full of legos. ;) I didn't even do a piece count. The boys did get a few sets for each other and received a few sets from Santa and grandparents; but, aside from a couple stocking stuffers for each boy, Nathan and I didn't contribute any legos at all. Woohoo! (We'll just ignore, for now, how very expensive archery is...lol.)

Grandparents arrived late Christmas day and were here until January 3. During that time, the boys made the most of additional adults willing to play games with them...we all visited the Chihuly exhibit at the Fort Collins Museum of Art (amazing stuff!)...and Nathan and I managed to get out a few times by ourselves. Good times. ;)

More to come...*almost* caught up I think... ;)
