HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now grown) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Tip & Technique Tuesday

Hey there! I have a blog post up on the Ormolu blog this morning...with a layout about the boys' first day of Options yesterday. Here's a sneak:

Go check it out! (And totally just click on the layout over there to make it bigger...I *think* you can read the journaling if you're interested in hearing about the boys' first day.)

Happy Monday to you!! Today's quote:

If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking. –Zen proverb

Just felt the need to take a moment here and express my gratitude for how awesome my life is. Feeling pretty darn good about the direction our life is heading right now as a family. So very blessed. I know that I still complain from time to time and that there’s plenty left to figure out and that there will be more bumps along the way. But. I’m encouraged by the knowledge that we’re on the right path for us. Gonna just keep on going…

No, no particular news or anything like that. Just happy today. ;)

Berthoud Family Fun Run

Just quickly...the boys participated in their sixth one mile fun run yesterday. They were seemingly happier than on Monday, and we're just delighted with this program. :) Here's the start of the race:

Yes, as you've probably noticed, they wear the same "running outfit" at pretty much every race...makes them easier for me to spot, lol. See that cow in the purple shirt on the far right? Micah's right behind her. The cow actually tripped and fell not long after this and Micah did some fancy footwork to avoid joining the small pile up. He was pretty happy with himself and I love this picture of him coming around the last corner:

All three boys are rather proud of their participation in this program and are banking on it helping them in their physical fitness tests in PE at Options this coming year. Methinks I'm going to actually add monthly "practice" fitness tests to my schedule for the year to help with that since they feel it's so important. :)

So. That's a small slice of our weekend. Our first week of the new school year went pretty well and I'll hopefully be back with an update on that soon...

Over the weekend...

No parades or big parties for us here but we still managed to have an eventful weekend...

On Friday night, Asher was awarded his orange belt at karate. The promotion ceremony involved showing off what kids had learned, awarding the new belts and then eating pizza. ;) Asher was pretty happy:

And here he is with the new belt actually on:

And karate wasn't all...it was a big weekend for Asher. :) Last weekend, he'd started testing the waters without training wheels; and, by this weekend, here's what we had:

(Many thanks, btw, to whatever friend it was who recommended that Balance Buddy! Saved Nathan's back, lol.)

Yup. We now have two two-wheeling boys on our hands, and they couldn't be happier! I distinctly overheard Asher say "This is so awesome!" under his breath numerous times as he was riding around the culdesaq practicing his new skills. We even managed a family bike ride over to the nearby Farmer's Market on Sunday (with Micah in the trailer so we could all stay at about the same speed, lol).

And then, this morning, the boys participated in their fifth Healthy Kids Fun Run:

They all looked to be struggling a bit more than previous runs, but all three managed to finish with great personal times (improvement for all three, I believe).

And now Nathan and I are getting less fun things checked off our lists and the boys are enjoying their last day of summer before we start school back up tomorrow...

Hope your weekend was lovely as well!

Happy Labor Day!

The secret to getting ahead is getting started. –Mark Twain

We’re starting our homeschooling year tomorrow, having taken much of August off. As I sit here today, though, I know that actually starting is often the most difficult part for me. I like to over-think things and ponder and second guess…to spend significant time worrying over whether the schedule I’ve planned will work and whether or not the curriculum I picked is the right fit and how I should go about organizing it all. I know myself well enough to know that I happen to love the planning portion of things. If outside forces don’t push me to move on, I’ll stay in that comfort zone of organizing longer than necessary almost every time.

But. As I said, we’re starting our homeschooling year tomorrow. I realized this morning that this will be the seventh fall that I’ve officially started a new year of homeschooling. (Woohoo! I feel like I might finally be getting the hang of this, lol!) And. I know, despite my own desire to keep organizing for another week or two, that getting started is the thing to do. I know that once I get going things will fall into place. They may not always fall where I want them to, but (like Newton said) an object in motion will remain in motion and all that. Because often times the very things I’m worrying about will work themselves out better when I’m in the midst of things…will work themselves out in ways I couldn’t even think of back in the planning stage.

So. Tomorrow we break out the new year. I’m stoked. Even though I love the “back to school” planning portion of things greatly, I’m excited about all the potential. :)

Here's to the 2011-12 school year!
