HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now grown) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Ten on Tuesday.

Random edition. ;)

1. I hate the wind. So there. (It's seriously my least favorite variety of weather. Managed to still run this morning but wasn't happy about it, lol.)

2. All the piles of branches still sitting around our neighborhood make me sad. (For those not local, the snow storm a couple weeks ago brought down so many branches and trees all around town that the city is doing free pick ups and has asked everyone to make a pile by the curb. It feels like our entire neighborhood is lined with piles. We could have an awesome bonfire but, sigh, that wouldn't be safe. ;) Oh, and the high winds over the weekend aren't helping.)

3. I'm a sucker for people selling me things. Really. This is why I generally don't do the grocery shopping or answer the door at home...I'm considerably more likely than Nathan to buy the cookies or knives or magazines if someone's selling them. ;) (Yes, within the past six months I actually have purchased two different knife sets that were being demonstrated at grocery stores. Nathan made me take the first set back, lol. I just feel bad for the demonstrators when no one else sticks around for their schpiel, kwim?)

4. I wish I had a slide in my home. I've wished this for years now.

5. Check out the new goodies in the Ormolu shop! I've got some sitting on my desk right now, just waiting patiently for me to find more time. ;)

6. I know this could apply to many situations, but can someone tell me what the difference is between the $16 eyelash curler at places like Sephora and the $2 one that I can buy at Target? Seriously. They look identical to me.

7. Is it bad that part of me really wants these boots? I found some on a great sale locally over the weekend. But, alas, they didn't have my size. Poo.

8. I'm really not ready for the fact that Thanksgiving is NEXT week. Did you know that?! NEXT week. Oy. Not that we have any huge plans or anything...I just feel like I've lost November somewhere. Wasn't it just Halloween?

9. I really should do Five on Fridays instead. It's hard to think of ten sometimes, lol.

10. Well, I guess that's it. I feel like I had more to say but I know that at least some of it is hush-hush, as it involves awesome holiday gifts that I've either purchased recently or am in the process of making. :)

Okay, off to take boys to karate now... :)

11.11.11

Belated. Sorry. :) But, we did manage to snap a picture on 11.11.11 at 11:11:

Grandma Nancy was visiting. The weather was cooperating. It was a beautiful day. :) We took this picture just before getting in the van to drive down to Boulder (see my previous post). Initially, I told them all to hold up 11 fingers just to see what they'd do. Micah held up both hands and a foot; the rest of them just laughed at me. :) Then, we came up with the idea of holding up a *total* of 11 fingers. Ta da. :)

Quote #46.

Today's quote:

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. –Lao Tzu

As the holidays are upon us and my to do list is starting to go crazy with projects to make and holiday traditions I want to continue, this quote spoke to me. I’m working on holding this in my mind as we journey toward winter. ;) Everything will work itself out, right? Right. :)

Incidentally, I stole this quote right off the side of a building:

Yep, last Friday, during Grandma Nancy’s visit, we went on the free Celestial Seasonings tour in Boulder. We looked fabulous in our hair nets and enjoyed both the tour and the sampling room. Learned some interesting facts about tea and even convinced Asher to taste some. Good times!

10K

Just so ya know...I ran my first 10K last weekend. It was the Heart Center of the Rockies 10K in Loveland. (They also had the half marathon and the 5K along with the last Healthy Kids Fun Run.) It was cold. ;) Unlike the 5K I did five weeks before, where it was in the 80s, I'm not sure that we broke freezing on Saturday. Still. I did it. :) Here's me crossing the finish line:

Freezing worries aside, it actually was fun. My friends Deanna & Pete (who are both awesome runners) ran it with me and both rocked their previous times. (Since this was my first, I didn't have anything to compare it to. But. It was almost exactly double my 5K time, so I'm calling that good.) While we all ran, Nathan took our combined six kiddos for hot chocolate...it was just too cold for them to stand around outside waiting for us, but they were back in time to cheer each of us across the finish line.

And, with that, I think my 2011 racing season is likely over, in favor of warmth and enjoying the holidays. :) A year ago, I didn't even own a pair of running shoes. Since August, I've run two 5Ks and a 10K. Frankly, I'm amazed. Who knows what 2012 will bring?

Quote #45.

First a quick update...yes, the way fat squirrel struck again. Numerous times over the course of the weekend, actually. And he has a posse. We counted three way fat squirrel friends...scaring away all the nice, normal-sized squirrels like the bullies that they are. After the doorstep got strewn even further with pumpkin guts, Nathan finally moved all of the pumpkins to our mulching area (with grass clippings and the like). The squirrels found them and feasted some more. Very weird.

Anyhow. I digress. :) This week's quote:

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go. –Rumi

True fact. ;)

Yup, just a simple little quote I found recently that is, well, spot on.
