HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Halloween!

It was a different sort of Halloween here this year...in a couple ways. First, Noah dressed up! It was the first time he's dressed up for Halloween since 2010, people.

He wasn't planning to. But last week his co-workers were talking about their costumes for Halloween and he decided to join in. Given the short notice, he decided to borrow Micah's costume this year. (Sidenote: Micah celebrated with friends in costume on Saturday. And not a single one of them took a photo so I have nothing. Sad. To be fair, Micah pointed out, he had no pockets so didn't have his phone with him. Still, poo. Anyhow, Micah went as Spider-Man.)

Given that Noah wasn't willing to just wear a speedo under the body suit like Micah did, lol, we came up with the brilliant idea to go as Peter B. Parker instead. Peter B. Parker is the semi-retired Spider-Man from "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse"...

Noah was trying to make a Peter B. Parker sort of face and even sported two different shoes. :) As it turned out, a couple of his co-workers bailed on their costumes, but Noah said he was still glad to be in costume...as being Peter was very comfy, moreso than his normal banking work clothes, lol.

And, just because, here's a photo from 2010...the last time Noah dressed up for Halloween (he's Darth Vader)...

...and, while I was looking for that picture, I found these from 2012. It's one of my favorite Halloween memories. All three boys were attending LEAP (the one day a week enrichment program we used when we were homeschooling), but the school had declared it pajama day and asked kids not to wear costumes. Asher and Micah got around that by dressing as Noah. :)

It was a period of time when Noah dressed very predictably, and it was hilarious because even the teachers recognized what the boys were doing, lol.

I love the second picture of Asher acting like Noah, telling me to stop taking pictures, lol.

Back to this year now...

So, Micah did his dressing up on Saturday. Asher sadly didn't get to dress up for work because the kids weren't allowed to wear costumes. And Noah went as Peter B. Parker. Once everyone was home again, Asher took the opportunity to become a Spider-Jedi...and played with some of the other masks we have hanging around. He convinced me to also recycle a costume, so I went as a dragonfly. (This was Micah's costume in 2017.) And, the other thing that made this year different is that we decided to set up our fire pit in the driveway and just sit out there to hand out candy.

(Every so often, we've actually decorated for Halloween but our neighbor across the street has been going crazy with Halloween inflatables the past few years so we've basically given up on competing with that, lol.)

Our time in the driveway was lovely.

  • The boys all came and joined us for parts of it..and snitched some candy, lol.
  • We got to see and enjoy the trick-or-treaters' costumes more without having to open and close the door so much. (It's so fun when kids are thrilled that you recognize what their costume is.)
  • We handed out about 50 full size candy bars. (Our neighborhood used to get a lot more trick-or-treaters but it was pretty slow this year. But. We guessed just about spot on for how much candy we'd bought so now have none left in the house...which is both good and bad, lol.)
  • We lured one neighbor out in her pajamas to catch up and visit, and we got to know another neighbor that we hadn't met before (who was drawn to our fire and stuck around to chat).
  • We may have also enjoyed some alcoholic drinks around the fire. :)
  • And we appreciated the beautiful fall weather which was pretty much perfect.

And one of the most cool things was these two little kids (a brother and sister). The older sister was dressed as a mime and the younger brother was Venom...who was then thrilled to see our Spider-Jedi. (Asher was the only boy still outside with us at that point I think.) Asher absolutely made his night by doing a backflip and then a front flip. Later, the mime brought a friend over to trick-or-treat but also to break character and actually ask where the "backflip guy" was. :) Sadly, Asher had gone inside to eat at that point. So the sister left and told her brother...who then came by a little later again just to check and see for himself. :) Yeah, I probably should have gone inside and gotten Asher. But it was still so sweet.

So, that was our Halloween. It was good. :)
