HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Overrun with boxes...

Remember that basement project I mentioned? Figured I'd give you a peek at what that really means so that you'll better understand why I'm not online much right now...

Here was the basement rec room at the start of the year:

Yeah. It was a mess. :) In all fairness, it's normally only horrid like that behind those curtains, where we'd been storing things since we moved in more than five years ago. The remaining open space had been just that...open, for the boys to let off steam. But, with the rearranging of the family room before Christmas and then the whole Christmas decorations dealio, the basement became a bit of a dumping ground. Oy. (To clarify, our basement has basically two rooms...this bigger "L" shaped one that we'd been using as two separate spaces and the guest bedroom. Right now, we're focusing on the bigger room. Hopefully the guest bedroom will be a breeze after this.)

So. Back to my story. In our attempts to create a more usable rec room (since the boys are getting bigger and need more space to burn energy when they can't go outdoors), we've emptied the entire space out and installed new lighting. Like so:

But. Here's our front room now:

Lovely, right? And sadly, this is only about 2/3 of the stuff out of that basement rec room (well, the picture here doesn't even show the full 2/3). The rest is stashed in the guest bedroom for the moment.

So. We're sorting and purging...starting with all the other areas in the house that can possibly hold this stuff, since we'll not be putting it back in the basement. Yeah. A whole house kind of project. ;) Simultaneously, painting the basement. And. Because we're crazy like that, we recently decided that rather than just clean and paint the space and leave it open, we'd also build a fort down there for the boys. Trying to keep our plans manageable but hopeful that it will be well worth it. But. That'll add weeks to the project of course. ;) Sigh.

Anyhow. That's what I'm up to. Man there's gonna be a good garage sale when spring comes around...if I can stomach having a room or two full of that stuff until the weather warms up, lol! Wish me luck!

Oy. I was in that mess last January. It almost took three months. Very worth it though. It has since made me utterly ruthless about what is 'needed'. Good luck, crazy girl!

Wow ... that'll be incredible when you're done. I'm envious - I'm in the purging process myself. :)
