HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

New tradition!

In case you were wondering, Mother's Day here is pretty low key this year...which is just dandy. :) We've got some summer plans this year so are keeping today uneventful. The only thing I asked the boys for was a group photo where everyone cooperates...

(Yup, Micah and I are standing on a step, lol.)

I've decided this is an awesome tradition to start. I was looking back and the only time we took a group picture on Mother's Day was 2011 (yet we take a group picture of the boys with Nathan almost every Father's Day, lol). I know I have other photos from other times throughout the year but am sad that it's taken until now for me to realize we don't do this regularly on Mother's Day. So...yay!

Happy Mother's Day!

Just a quick shout out to wish my mom a Happy Mother's Day!

This is us last November...hanging out in mom's kitchen while my nephew crouches behind us, lol.

Here's hoping all you moms out there are enjoying the day...and that those who are able to are celebrating with your own moms. :)

Wish list

Life is awfully good here. Truly. :)

Still. I find myself with a bit of a wish list today...things that have been on my mind lately...

1. Stall doors that swing outward. Would it really be so difficult for bathroom stall doors to uniformly swing outward rather than inward? I'm tired of straddling the toilet to open the door, kwim?

2. A thermostat that's smart. Maybe it does exist already and I just don't have it, but is it too much to ask that my thermostat be smart enough to know whether I need heat or cold? Why can't I just set a specific temperature and have the system recognize whether we're below that or above that without me having to manually change from one to the other? I live here in Colorado, for crying out loud. The temperatures are crazy inconsistent. ;)

3. Way to harness kid calorie burn. If I could convert Asher and Micah's calorie burn to be my own, wouldn't that be freakin' awesome?! I could burn more calories and they could burn less so that they might actually bulk up a bit, lol.

4. A way to send Seattle's weather back to them. Um. I very deliberately chose not to live in Seattle because I can't handle the weather. I NEED the sunshine. This overcast, drizzly, wet weather we're having here this week is messing with my head. Ugh. (I'm trying to look on the bright side and be thankful that we haven't much had to water our yard yet this year, but still.)

5. An explanation of standardized testing. Noah's at his second full day of standardized testing this year right now. It's not the end of the world or anything and, fortunately, he handles tests just fine. But. What the heck? I recognize that this is my first year dealing with it since we've only just started public school, but can someone explain what the point is? Specifically, Noah's school's testing (and I'm unclear as to whether this is what's happening in all Colorado schools) requires testing at 75% and 90% of the way through the school year...which means that he had testing just before spring break and now again (with just six weeks of instruction between the two). How is that supposed to show anything? Further, the testing this time around is happening the week before finals...with classes still in session such that students are being expected to make up class time lost when they go to testing during this time...finals prep time. (And the testing has caused disruption to class spaces, too...for instance, Noah's computer programming class basically can't operate this week during testing, as they don't have access to the school computers. Awesome.) Seriously, how much sense does that make? Sigh.

(For what it's worth, I know that Noah's school isn't thrilled about the requirements either. At all. But it's a state requirement, so they're unhappily complying. It just makes me sad all around for everyone involved.)

6. A parent's guide to teenagers. Okay, this is the big one. As we're now in this realm of having a teenager, I often find myself wishing for a handbook. There are all sorts of books about how to raise a baby...where's my guide on things like how to deal with moodiness and how to keep them fed enough and where to find clothes that fit and, most importantly right now, how to navigate the drivers license process? :) Really, I think I've mostly figured out that last one now...as we're gearing up to tackle drivers ed this summer...but it wasn't easy. I didn't find any one source that just laid it all out. Why is that?

So. That's my list at the moment. I'm sure there are more. What's on your list?

Content

Having a pretty good weekend, if I do say so, myself. :)

Yesterday, Nathan took boys to the Free Comic Book Day event happening at the comic book store where they enjoy weekly HeroClix tournaments while I attended an informational meeting about the school Noah currently attends and their plans to open a new middle school this fall. (For what it's worth, we're not ready to send either younger boy to middle school just yet (Micah's technically not old enough anyhow); but, with this new information, we might just consider it in a year or two.)

After that, we spent some time tackling housework before enjoying the afternoon/evening with friends. The boys had a darn good time just being together with their pals. :)

This morning, we took the boys to see the new Avengers movie (which gets two thumbs up from everyone in our house, lol). Got there early enough to get good seats and take a couple selfies...

...much to Noah's disappointment... ;)

And then we headed over to Texas Roadhouse for lunch with the gift cards I got from the boys' JOAD team for keeping the records during the season. (Yum and woohoo!)

And now Noah's mowing while Nathan and Asher are getting groceries for the week, and I'm down to just a few things left on my list for the weekend.

Happy sigh.

Science via mail

A month or so ago, I signed up for a subscription lesson in a box type thing called Tinker Crate. This morning, I finally got around to doing the first box with the boys...well, actually, I had Nathan run this particular lesson. ;) I think we can all agree that it was a hit!

  • I got an hour or so to tackle my own to do list...
  • Nathan got to spend some quality time with our younger two (and got to appreciate just what sort of morning (lack of) enthusiasm for schoolwork I deal with regularly, lol)...
  • and Asher and Micah (after they got going a bit) were delighted to learn more about hydraulics.

Everybody wins!

So. We're pretty happy with this monthly subscription thing so far. Everything was clearly detailed and all the supplies were included. (They even made use of the packaging!) Easy and straight-forward. Boys learned and had fun. All good. :)

Btw, I also ordered the Doodle Crate for some fun art projects, though we've yet to tackle those. (I'll update when we do.) And, they have kits geared toward younger kids, too.
