HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Karate Kid

This morning we took Asher down past Denver for a karate tournament. Both he and Micah have participated twice in tournaments at our local karate school, with kids they already know and go to class with. But this was our first experience with a regional tournament...with about a dozen rings running simultaneously and lots of other kids from other schools. Asher had just really wanted to try his hand at a larger tournament. :)

And, though he was plenty nervous, he did a fabulous job:

He competed in Traditional Forms for 10 year olds...intermediate level. There were seven other kids in his division, most of whom have been doing this all season. (This was actually the final tournament of the season. Fortunately, our local karate school prepared him well in what to expect and do, so he just had to adjust to the noise and number of people, lol.)

He drew to go fourth in the order and did well...ending up in a tie. The two who were tied performed their forms one more time, with Asher winning the tie-breaker unanimously and, therefore, taking third. He was pretty happy:

That kick is *amazing* - what leg extension and perfect form!!! I have to show that to Jordan. Congrats to Asher! Wow, *12* rings! That IS a lot of noise and action going on simultaneously. Good for him to be able to maintain his focus. :)
