HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Matisse...

Just a quick post with the boys' Matisse inspired works from last week:

Basically, we just talked briefly about Matisse and his use of cut paper and color to evoke feelings and tell a story. I showed the boys a number of examples. Then I let them loose with construction paper, scissors and glue. This is what we ended up with. The boys were quite happy when Nathan came home from work and was able (pretty accurately, oddly enough) to figure out what emotion each boy was going for. Noah's (top) was simply cheerfulness. Asher's (middle) was confusion (I find this hilarious). And, Micah's (bottom) was a sunset.

(To be quite honest, this was an on-the-fly sort of art lesson for me. I decided on it right then for the sake of having an art "project." The lesson I'd "planned" got scratched, as I decided that the glue and water involved might not be the best thing for a one handed boy. ;) I really need/want to do better in 2011 about having more art lessons, though. This is a classic case for me of letting the planning (and the wanting to get things "just so" before proceeding) get in the way of the doing. And it's really too bad because the boys love everything I suggest, even when I don't think it's a good enough lesson or whatever.)

I love this idea. I get so stuck in my plans, I forget to have fun with my kiddos. Its nice to see you are able to get out of the box. Maybe you will inspire me to do something off of my plan. :)
