HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Still Monday...

The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives. –Robert Maynard Hutchins

Working on this lately. It’s relatively easy to get caught up in “the plan” and checking off the next lesson on the list. But. I need to remember more often that the ultimate goal is to prepare my boys to learn on their own, not to make sure that they remember the date of the first battle of the American Revolution. :)

For Sale: Duplos. A lot of them.

So, back at the end of August, I sorted through the vast collection of Duplo blocks we'd acquired. After having so nicely sorted and cleaned and stored them all, I'm finally getting around to trying to get rid of them. So. If you happen to be looking for some Duplo sets to buy, here's what I have...

Bob the Builder: We had a number of the sets...I took pictures of the sets put back together as best we could (meaning in some cases one or two of the blocks is slightly different but the main pieces are all there) and then a picture of all the extra pieces that we had. Asking $60 for all the Bob stuff. (Click on any of the pictures for a bigger image.) **SOLD**

Lightning McQueen
: Technically, this is a Mega Bloks set (Piston Cup set) and not Duplo but it's in pretty good condition and is complete. Asking $3 for this. **SOLD**

Diego
: Two of these sets are Mega Bloks and one is Duplo. The Mega Bloks sets are in almost like new condition. I'm pretty sure that the Duplo set is missing something but not anything that was key (like another green block or something). Asking $10 for all the Diego stuff. **SOLD**

Thomas the Tank Engine: I'm pretty sure this is most of three sets...James at Knapford Station, Percy at the Water Tower and Salty the Dockyard Diesel. The trains are all complete but the sets may be missing a block or two. Asking $20 for the Thomas stuff. **SOLD**

Circus: This is one of my favorites and is in great condition. There are actually two sets...the circus and the circus train. These were maybe the last sets we actually bought and are complete. Asking $30 for both sets together.

Trains: This consists of the Intelli Train Gift Set and then some miscellaneous other train pieces we had. Here's a link to the Intelli train stuff: http://cavefish.net/intelli-train/pages/3325.htm Our set is complete except for a couple blocks (plain white and one green one I think). But, unfortunately, the yellow engine that goes with the set appears to not be working (or so Noah told me). The yellow and red engine from the miscellaneous pieces, though, *does* work...and operates with the smart chip things just the same as the Intelli train except for the green one...because the yellow and red engine does not have a "fuel intake". (Did I mention that the two engines (not the steam engine) take batteries and can then run by themselves? This set is actually pretty darn cool.) All of this track also works with the Thomas and Friends engines. Asking $40 for all this. (The first picture has it all...the following pics are closeups.) **SOLD**

Other: I also have about four gallon size bags of "other" pieces. It includes lots of miscellaneous pieces like animals and dinosaurs and cave men and race cars and a small train set and some weird construction pieces and, well, stuff. ;) Asking $20 for all these random pieces. **SOLD**

Everything is in good/used condition (no cracks or damage that I could see...maybe a little grubby on some, but nothing a wipe wouldn't solve) and comes from a pet and smoke free home. :) It is being sold as is. I plan to list this stuff on ebay and Craigslist starting next week but figured I'd give blog readers and Facebook followers first dibs. ;) (Feel free to pass this info along if you know someone who's interested!)

So, if you're interested in some or all, let me know by this weekend. I'm happy to negotiate on prices (especially if you're getting more than one set) but you'll need to cover shipping costs if you're not local. :)

***ETA: Just a quick wrap up. All of the above except the circus sets are spoken for now. :) I really like the circus sets, though, so I'm thinking I may just keep them, lol. Thanks to all!***

This week...

To bring up a child in the way he should go, travel that way yourself once in a while. – Josh Billings

This past weekend, we all went to the neighborhood park and tried walking, blindfolded, in a straight line from one soccer goal post to the other. It was hilarious. Asher literally went around in circles. Micah almost walked into a ditch/canal. Nathan almost hit a tree. Noah was bound and determined to walk the straightest but still veered most of the time. I, on the other hand, apparently have some weird sense of direction when blindfolded and walked straight from one goal post to the other on the first try. Ha! (It’s nice to be better than the boys at *something*, right?)

Before you ask *why* we did this, let me just say that apparently the boys saw it on Mythbusters and needed to try for themselves. (I’ve not seen this episode yet but plan to watch it this week.) In any case, it was fun. And, it was a good reminder that sometimes I need to put away the plans and the goals and just do what the boys want to do in the moment. In trying to raise boys full of curiosity and willing to test things, this works. ;)
