HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

#32 Try a different hair color

Okay, ignore my goofy expression...this was the best photo I managed that shows the purple highlights I got last week. Fun, right? :)

In any case, this was #32 on my list. Bam. :)

(I figured I'd best post a picture sooner rather than later...the color is already starting to fade from as vibrant as it first was...still fun, though! It takes a lot to lighten my hair enough to add color, otherwise maybe next time I'd color even more, lol.)

Father's Day

Thank you, Nathan, for being a true partner in this crazy parenting ride...

  • for taking care of all the science questions,
  • for handling most boy-specific things,
  • for bringing home the bacon (both literally and figuratively, lol),
  • for providing the genetic possibility that the boys won't be too horribly short,
  • for taking a different boy grocery shopping with you each week (to share one-on-one time and to demonstrate sharing domestic chores),
  • for having the same priorities,
  • for taking the time to go to boys' events whenever possible,
  • and for all the other stuff I'm not listing here. ;)

(Here are my guys in Estes Park playing our traditional round of Father's Day miniature golf.)

Love you, Nathan!

Happy Father's Day all around!

How to make a Loki costume

Ta da!

So, the younger two boys and I are going to Comic Con in Denver. We're awesome, so we're dressing up as Thor, Loki and Frigga (mom of Thor & Loki). After a rather frustrating search online and locally for Loki costumes that weren't custom made and hundreds of dollars, I ended up making my own for Micah...jacket and scepter in any case.

In the hopes that it might come in handy for someone else...here's how:

1. Start with a child sized trench coat. This proved difficult until I realized that I needed to change my search to costumes that used trench coats. I ended up with this one.

2. Trim off the sleeves. (This, I suppose, is optional. I chose to cut them off given the season and anticipated heat at Comic Con. Instead, I just made arm guards from peewee soccer shin guards covered in gold duct tape.)

3. Cut off about a foot from the bottom, and set aside that material for later. (The coat was too long for Micah anyhow. Also, though, I needed the extra fabric for the shoulders. In retrospect, I could have cut a bit less, but I don't want Micah to trip up on the jacket anyhow.)

4. Fold back the center a couple inches and cut away the material, leaving just the lapel portion. (The fact that this was a trench that buttons all the way from neck to foot came in very handy with the extra material along the center.) Cover that in green duct tape. (Duct tape is your friend and is awesome. Thanks to the type of material, too, I didn't feel the need to hem any edges. Yay!)

Here's a sketch I made to work from. It's rough:

5. Trim the lower flaps and add gold duct tape stripes. (The gold duct tape was cut in half lengthwise...amazingly, Noah informed me that you can simply snip the tape and pull it apart evenly. Beautiful.)

6. Take that material you set aside earlier and cut out shoulder pieces. I made a pattern from foam sheets first and just messed around with it until it looked roughly right. It's not a match to the actual costume but worked for Micah's size and maintaining mobility. Stitch the shoulder pieces to the jacket. (I didn't stitch the entire piece...just along the inner edges where the stitch marks are.)

Done.

As for the scepter...

1. Get a pvc pipe, a cap and a 45 degree elbow. We cut it so that Micah's hand rested comfortably when he grasped it.

2. I found a bouncy ball that lights up and attached it with wire. (I had Nathan drill a few holes in the elbow to attach the wire to.) (Micah was resistant to this bouncy ball because he felt it was too big. The fact that it lights up when he stamps the scepter has now won him over, lol. Also, the spikes, while not really a replica, made it much easier to wrap wire around. We had a number of other ideas (like a shiny blue rock or blue light bulbs) for this part but this ended up working well.)

3. I sketched the blade design out on foam board then cut it out and covered the entire thing in silver duct tape. (This took awhile and I quickly gave up on trying to keep things smooth, opting instead for a battered look, lol.)

4. I attached the blade to the pipe with silver duct tape then covered the pipe part back up with gold duct tape.

Oh, and I found the awesome helmet on eBay. ;) I fully anticipate that Micah can use it this winter to keep his noggin warm also.

And that's how we created Loki. :)

Obviously I could have embellished things a great bit more if I had more time and cared enough. :) But. For our intents and purposes, this worked great. Whew.

Stay tuned for group pictures of the three of us...

Birthday photos

So. For my birthday on Saturday, Nathan removed that last bush in the front yard and set up an area for me to plant my cucamelons. Yay! Also, the boys wrote me lovely cards that were very true to each boy's personality. :) And then we all drove up to Estes Park where we played a round of miniature golf (covering our Father's Day tradition in advance), ate the yummiest meal at Ed's Cantina (complete with cake!), did some window shopping through town, got ice cream at Hayley's and then took some pictures to commemorate the day.

(Note, it was part of Noah's gift to me to actually cooperate in these pictures. Okay, to be fair, it was a gift that I told him he was giving me, but a gift nonetheless, lol.)

And then we headed home, thankful that the weather had cooperated during our time in Estes. (The forecast said rain but we enjoyed at least some sunshine and didn't need umbrellas.)

All in all, it was a lovely day. ;)

40 before 40

Happy birthday to me! Yup. Yesterday I turned 39. This coming year will be my last before the big 4-0. To celebrate, I made a list. ;) Because, know what? I feel like celebrating. Forty still seems like a big number, don't get me wrong, lol. But the whole "over the hill" thing doesn't make sense to me. The me who's been trying to run more lately says, if it's all downhill after 40, won't that just be easier? ;)

So. In no particular order, here are 40 things I plan to accomplish in my fortieth year...to celebrate where I've been, who I've become and what I'm looking forward to in the coming years...

40 Before 40

1. Complete the Equinox half marathon (I officially blame Deanna if I live to regret this, lol.)
2. Read 40 books (Shouldn't be a problem)
3. Volunteer (I'm deliberately leaving this vague and will see what opportunities arise...)
4. Update this blog (new header and organization and maybe an actual plan?)
5. Get a good family portrait taken
6. Try a new recipe monthly
7. Pay for a stranger's meal
8. Try yoga
9. Do a pull up unassisted
10. Go to high tea with Molly
11. Draw more
12. Throw a party
13. Splurge on a "good" bra (that's not a sports bra and isn't designed only for comfort, lol)
14. Update my passport (and get some for boys)
15. Create a family portrait collage for the hallway (I've had the frame and the spot ready for ages...)
16. Read at least 5 books out loud with the boys
17. Archive all my photos
18. Watch Casablanca (because I never have)
19. Get my wisdom teeth out (not exciting, I know, but it would be nice to have done and off my list, lol)
20. Hand make Christmas cards again
21. Run 400 miles
22. Dress up for Comic Con
23. Write a letter once a month (using actual stationery and stamps)
24. Go to a drive in movie with the boys
25. Take the boys to a baseball game
26. Take an art class (for me!)
27. Grow cucamelons
28. Find my perfect pair of jeans (I hate shopping for jeans but love the convenience of jeans, so this would be huge)
29. Visit a national park I've not been to before
30. Update my will and emergency family documents
31. Make it all the way through a 30 day hula hooping challenge
32. Try a different hair color
33. Finish my unfinished projects for others
34. Go ice skating (haven't been in decades)
35. Use our new local MAX system at least once
36. Declutter at least 40 items from my stuff
37. Shoot my bow with the boys more regularly and score at least one 30
38. Establish regular date nights...once a month with each of my guys
39. Buy more shoes (because I figure I should have at least one item on here that's a given, lol)
40. Make a bucket list for the coming decade (so that I can put some bigger items on the list and have enough time to have a shot at accomplishing them) ;)

Whew. I've started a new category over on the left to track this list and will blog as I accomplish them. :) If you have any lists of your own, I'd love to celebrate with you...link me up!
