HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Lessons learned

Since I need to stop dwelling on the sadness of the High Park Fire and since I really need to get motivated to actually straighten up my house now that the garage sale is over...

Here are some lessons I learned from our garage sale:

  • There's a fine line between buying stuff "just in case" and being a hoarder. ;) (as evidenced by the boxes and boxes of extra supplies purchased with the intent to make gifts and the actual extra ungifted gifts, lol...)
  • Putting up a big, neon sign that says "If it's not labeled, it's $1" does not mean that people will stop asking you how much everything is. (Note: I did label more than half the stuff. But even those clearly labeled things brought questions of how much they were. Argh.)
  • Even if your kids are old enough to fend for themselves for a morning, you still apparently need to expressly tell them to eat something.
  • Cute little kids are my downfall...I tend to just give things to them. :)
  • One man's trash really is another man's treasure.
  • After your garage sale is done, you inevitably find more stuff you should have included. ;)
Okay, off to tackle our front room (one of the two places I'd been piling things while shuffling stuff for the sale) before coercing boys to do the rest of the day's schoolwork...

Daniel got TONS of stuff given to him for free and really cheap when we went garage saling. It was great!
