HELLO

Hi. I'm Amanda...a happy wife and mom to three awesome guys. We've lived here in Fort Collins for more than 20 years and are proud to call it home. Before moving to CO, I worked at a city attorney's office, making use of my law and Master's degrees from Duke. After settling in Fort Collins, I homeschooled my three (now teenage and older) sons and was delighted to experience music classes, soccer, karate, swim team, archery, Science Olympiad, First Lego League, parkour, and climbing (not all at the same time!). From 2005-10, I was also a contributing editor for a national scrapbooking magazine, authoring a book and a couple of monthly columns. From 2009-10, I founded and ran the Good Grief Blog. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my family, volunteering with The Matthews House, traveling and indoor rock climbing.

Hey, hey it's my birthday!

Woohoo! Feeling pretty dang good about life right now and am celebrating my birthday (and Mother's Day) by going to CKU, so no big doings going on today. I'm wanting to do something fun, though, so how about a little RAK (random act of kindness)? I have a lovely "All About Me" album kit (the ones put out by CK...comes with the album and all the "stuff" and instructions) up for grabs! Just post here and tell me the name of a good book...we signed up for the library's summer reading program yesterday and I'm always on the lookout for good reads, both for myself and the boys. :)

I'll have one of the boys draw a name from the posts tomorrow around noon!

Happy Birthday!!!

I love the book The Color of Water by James McBride. It was an Oprah book years ago, but I just had a chance to read it a few months ago. My students (no matter what their age, 5-12) love any of the picture books bt Robert Munsch such as Jonathan Cleaned up - Then he Heard a Sound or 40 Below.

Happy Birthday Amanda! Check out the Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. It was my favorite book as a kid and I go back and read it all the time. It has very clever play-on-words things throughout it, so it's perfect for any age!

Hi Amanda...Happy Birthday! I have two books to recommend (well, actually, I could name more...I'm kind of a book nut):

Happy Birthday!!!
Right now I'm reading "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk. Very good so far.
Just finished "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Piccoult. Very good.
"My Sister's Keeper" By Jodi Piccoult is fantastic! I would definitely recommend this one!

Happy Reading this summer!!
Christie

Here are three of my latest and greatest adult reads:
"The Road", by Cormac McCarthy
"Blind your ponies" and "Amos" both of these are by Stanley Gordon West
For kids, my boy's always loved: 'Heh little ant" by Phillip and Hanna Hoose When they were younger.
and a great book to read to kids of any age for the summer would be: "Eragon" by Christopher Paolini. I'm a mom of boy's but my niece loved these also.

Happy birthday, Amanda. Today's blog really got a lot of responses! I think the boys might be ready for The Chronicles of Narnia -- at least Noah and Asher. We started reading them to Nathan when he was six. nan

Happy Birthday, lady!

I have to put my vote in for my favorite Children's books....OWL BABIES (eeep, I forget the author) is a real fave in this house, as is LITTLE PEA by Amy Krause Rosenthal, who also wrote a favorite of mine, ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AN ORDINARY LIFE. So fun.

Happy Birthday, Amanda. I agree with several people who recommended The Secret Life of Bees. It's one of my favs. For the kids I love the Tacky the Penguin books by Helen Lester. Kati

Bel Canto by Ann Patchett is beautiful and different but not too abstruse.
